Rumor: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Writer Robert Orci Tapped To Write Undisclosed Marvel Film For Sony

A new rumor details that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 writer Robert Orci has been tapped to write an undisclosed Marvel film for Sony.

The rumor comes from TheWrap, who had originally reported that Orci would be writing an “Untitled Spider-Man spin-off” film. However, they would update their story to indicate that this project “comes from a different corner of the Marvel universe that Sony has access to.”

TheWrap believes the project will “be a part of Sony’s Marvel universe, which is not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe but does include Marvel Comics properties such as “Nightwatch,” “Silk,” “Venom,” “Silver and Black,” and “Morbius the Living Vampire.””

This information might not be all that accurate given what we have seen following the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home.

First, J.K. Simmons reprised his role as J. Jonah Jameson from Spider-Man: Far From Home in a YouTube video published by Sony Pictures Entertainment. In that video Jameson further unmasks Peter Parker as Spider-Man.

Maybe the biggest piece of evidence against TheWrap’s suggestion that Sony’s films are separate from the MCU came via the Morbius trailer.

In that trailer, not only do we get an image of Spider-Man albeit in the PlayStation 4’s version of Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man suit, but at the end of the trailer, Michael Keaton shows up. While it has not been confirmed, Keaton is believed to be reprising his role as Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Furthermore DR Movie News reported that the “MCU and Sony’s Spider-Verse are bridged.”

They explained, “From what we’ve gathered, the Sony Spider-Verse events & plot points will only be referenced in Spider-Man films & NOT in any other Marvel Cinematic Universe films. Spider-Man MCU films will affect the Sony films, but Sony films won’t affect the MCU.”

As for what this different corner of the Marvel Universe that Sony has acquired, it’s anyone’s guess. Leaked documents from 2015 provided a detailed list of all the characters that Sony had access to as part of their Spider-Man Universe. That list has hundreds if not thousands of characters. Although it is more than likely out of date as Frank Castle aka The Punisher is on the list.

One possible option could be that Sony might embrace a future Marvel universe and bring Spider-Man 2099 aka Miguel O’Hara to the big screen as well as the giant corporation of Alchemax. While it’s not technically separate from other Sony films like Venom, Spider-Man 2099 is definitely from another corner of the Marvel Universe that Sony would have access to.

Another possibility could be the rumored Spider-Woman film. A rumor cropped up back in February that Marvel and Sony were working on a new film set for an October 2021 release date.

Following that rumor, others indicated it could be a Spider-Woman film, with one rumor indicated that a Spider-Woman film was actually already in development and they were looking at Tomb Raider actor Alicia Vikander to star.

What do you make of this new rumor from TheWrap? If it’s true do you think it could be Spider-Man 2099? What about Spider-Woman? What other possibilities do you think it could be?
