Star Wars fans of the old Republic era and expanded universe can smile today. At long last, the planet Korriban, has been restored to Star Wars canon.
Korriban was conceived by writers Tom Veitch and Kevin J. Anderson, and first appeared in the comic Tales of the Jedi: Dark Lords of the Sith 2: The Quest for the Sith.
The Sith Homeworld
It was a barren world greatly influenced by the dark side of the Force. And, it was haunted by powerful Sith spirits.
Korriban was explored in detail in the game Knights of The Old Republic, and its sequel, Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords.
Millenia before Luke Skywalker, Korriban served as the Sith homeworld.
Ancient Sith such as Marka Ragnos, Ajunta Pall, Naga Sadow, and Ludo Kressh were buried there.
Darth Bane, the Sith lord who created the rule of two, is also buried on Korriban.
The Sith Empire
The Sith Empire would start on this planet as well.
According to Wookieepedia:
“The Sith Empire was founded in 6900 BBY by exiled fallen Jedi fleeing the Battle of Corbos, which concluded the Hundred-Year Darkness. The fallen Jedi landed on Korriban.”
Using their training in the Force, the fallen Jedi amazed the Sith and elevated themselves to god-like status on Korriban, becoming the rulers of the Sith people. As years passed, and interbreeding occurred between the Fallen Jedi and the Sith, the term “Sith” came to mean not only the original inhabitants of Korriban, but also their fallen Jedi masters. Until the rise of Naga Sadow, the existence of the Sith Empire was unknown to the Galactic Republic.”
George Lucas liked the concept of Korriban, but reportedly felt the name was a little too close to “Coruscant.”
As a result, when he used the planet in the Clone Wars animated series, he renamed it “Moraband.”
This new name clearly derives from the Latin word “moribund,” which refers to something in a stagnant, near-dead state.
Star Wars fans hypothesized that the planet’s name had simply changed in the past, and that Korriban and Moraband were just two different names for the same world.
Korriban Is Back
Now, it’s back to just one name. The right name.
It’s likely that the change was made to suit one of the new books coming out soon. And, for a possible Old Republic movie trilogy down the road.
Are you excited, Star Wars fans?
