Sonic the Hedgehog Box Office Prediction Tracking UPWARD

Sonic the Hedgehog’s box office tracking is heading in the right direction for Paramount.

Industry tracking website Box Office Pro originally predicted back in December the film would earn between $20 and $30 million in its opening weekend with a specific number of $26 million.

They would also predict the film would make between $65 million and $100 million at the domestic box office with them predicting it would bring in $86 million in total.

They would cite that “social media metrics have been increasingly positive as sentiment has improved in recent months thanks to the studio’s decision to ‘correct’ Sonic’s design after online outcry earlier this year.”

Box Office Pro also believes the film will do well over the Valentine’s Day weekend debuting in theaters three weeks before Disney’s Onward.

While those predictions weren’t too shabby for the film, their latest numbers indicate the film is on the upward trend.

Their latest prediction sees the film having an opening weekend between $30 million and $35 million with Box Office Pro predicting it will make $33 million. That’s a 27% increase in what Box Office Pro predicts the film will earn.

Not only are they predicting a greater opening weekend gross, but they also are predicting it will bring in more over the course of its run at the box office. Box Office Pro is now predicting the film will earn between $90 million and $130 million. They specifically note it will earn $115 million at the domestic box office. That’s a 34% increase!

Those numbers are in range of Warner Bros. Detective Pikachu. The Ryan Reynolds starring film had an opening weekend of $54.3 million and would go on to earn $144.1 million at the domestic box office.

If Sonic the Hedgehog is able to hit the high end mark of $130 million it would be the highest grossing film of 2020 at the domestic box office.

The-Numbers currently reports Bad Boys For Life holds that title with $120.6 million. It’s followed by 1917 which has earned $101.5 million. In third place is Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker with only $50 million.

Sonic the Hedgehog speeds into theaters on February 14th. The film stars James Marsden, Ben Scwartz, Tika Sumpter, and Jim Carrey. It is directed by Jeff Fowler with a script written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller.

Here’s the official description:

“Based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG tells the story of the world’s speediest hedgehog as he embraces his new home on Earth. In this live-action adventure comedy, Sonic and his new best friend Tom (James Marsden) team up to defend the planet from the evil genius Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) and his plans for world domination. The family-friendly film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.”
