Spider-Man: Far From Home Actress Zendaya Responds to Fan Who Told Her “Not My MJ”

Spider-Man: Far From Home actress Zendaya responded to a fan who told her “not my MJ.”

In a now-deleted tweet a fan reportedly tweeted to Zendaya “not MJ.” The tweet from the fan came after Zendaya debuted her new red hairdo while promoting Spider-Man: Far From Home in London. The actress noted her new look was an homage to “MJ.” She even used one of Mary Jane Watson’s iconic lines to debut the new hair color.

Zendaya responded to the fan saying, “Too late.”

Zendaya’s character throughout homecoming was Michelle Jones. However, towards the end of the film. Jones is appointed the team captain where she reveals that her “friends refer to me as MJ.”

Both Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige and Sony’s Amy Pascal were clear that Zendaya was not Mary Jane Watson despite receiving the same nickname as the famous Spider-Man love interest, who would go on to become his wife.

Feige told IGN back in 2017:

“Well, we never even looked at it as a big reveal necessarily but more of just a fun homage to his past adventures and his past love. She’s not Mary Jane Watson. She never was Mary Jane Watson. She was always this new high school character, Michelle, who we know there’s an “M” in Michelle and an “M” in Mary. [laughs] So we’re so clever and we thought, “Wouldn’t it be neat if her initials were MJ?” And then I think it leaked that she would be playing MJ and then it became a whole headache for Zendaya to have to navigate. It was never a big, “Oh my God, it’s a big reveal!” There are big reveals in the movie. That’s not one of them.”

Pascal would add, “She is not going to end as being Mary Jane Watson.”

Feige concluded, “She’s not Mary-Jane Watson. Is she going to date Peter? Are they going to fall in love? She seems to be intrigued with him. There’s a nice chemistry there. Who knows what will happen in the future films?”

While Michelle Jones might not be Mary Jane Watson, she uses her nickname and appears to be a replacement for Mary Jane Watson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

What do you make of Zendaya’s response to the fan? Do you think Michelle Jones is a replacement for Mary Jane Watson? Do you think the MCU will ever introduce Mary Jane Watson?
