Spider-Man: Far From Home Director Jon Watts: Mysterio is a “Cool Uncle” to Spider-Man

Spider-Man: Far From Home director Jon Watts recently discussed the relationship between Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio and Spider-Man describing Mysterio as a “cool uncle.”

Watts spoke with Entertainment Weekly where he described the relationship between Gyllenhaal’s Quentin Beck and Spider-Man, “If Tony Stark was sort of the mentor in the previous films, we thought it would be interesting to play Mysterio as almost like the cool uncle.”

And it appears the two don’t just have a friendly relationship on screen. Holland revealed both he and Gyllenhaal got along quite well.

“If you look at any interview I’ve ever done prior to this movie and someone asked me, ‘Who would you work with if you could work with any actor?’ I would’ve said Jake Gyllenhaal. And when I found out it was him, I was stoked, but also really nervous. But Jake absolutely was more than I ever could have expected.”

However, their friendship did make it hard to get through some takes because they were constantly cracking each other up. Jon Watts explains, “sometimes they would crack each other up, and we could not get through takes occasionally. It was a problem!”

Watts also revealed some key information about Spider-Man’s new black suit. He indicated that its a re-purposed Black Widow suit. Watts teases, “It kind of looks like Black Widow — maybe it was one of her suits and they just tailored it.”

Spider-Man: Far From Home tickets will go on sale on May 6th at 6am PT. The film hits theaters on Tuesday, July 2nd.

What do you make of Watts’ description of Mysterio and Spider-Man’s relationship? Do you like the idea of Mysterio being the “cool uncle?” What about the idea of Spider-Man’s black suit being a Black Widow hand-me-down?
