J.J. Abrams released the first teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
Take a look.
The trailer seems to indicate that Rey is the last Jedi, but also hints that the Emperor didn’t actually die in Return of the Jedi when Darth Vader threw him down the shaft of the Death Star. In fact, after the trailer played at Star Wars Celebration, actor Ian McDiarmid, who plays Emperor Palpatine appeared on the stage and used his iconic Palpatine voice to have the teaser trailer play again.
The trailer opens with Luke Skywalker providing a voice over saying, “We’ve passed on all we know. A thousand generations live in you now. But this is your fight.” Towards the end of the trailer, Skywalker also states, “We’ll always be with you. No one is ever really gone” as we get a shot of Rey hugging General Leia Organa.
During the Episode IX panel at Star Wars Celebration, director J.J. Abrams described the film, “What I will say is that the movie doesn’t immediately pick up after the last film. Some time has gone by. What I’ll say is that in this movie, and you can tell by that picture, it’s the very beginning of it. This is an adventure that the group goes on together.”
Disney CEO Bob Iger recently confirmed this film is the end of the Skywalker saga, “Because the Skywalker saga comes to an end with this ninth movie.” It’s really interesting it’s titled “The Rise of Skywalker.”
