The upcoming Sam Raimi produced The Grudge released their latest horror-filled trailer.
Take a look.
The film comes 15 years after Sam Raimi introduced America to The Grudge, which was based on the Japanese horror movie Ju-on: The Grudge directed by Takashi Shimizu.
Raimi recalls, “Takashi’s Grudge films were very successful in Japan and I’d so loved his series, I wanted the American audience to see The Grudge.”
Now, The Grudge is back.
The Grudge is directed by Nicolas Pesce and stars Andrea Riseborough, Demián Bichir, John Cho, Betty Gilpin, Lin Shaye, and Jacki Weaver.
Pesce describes his love for horror, “The fact that a movie can, days later, make you afraid to go to bed is awesome.”
Raimi has high praise for Pesce and the film’s R-rating saying:
“The fact that Nick can make this film with an R rating is a great weapon in the arsenal of a storyteller whose goal is to terrify the audience. He can portray these vengeful ghosts really harming their victims, and he can show blood on the screen without fear of it being cut.”
This new film takes place in 2004 and stays within the same timeline as Raimi’s film. However, it brings The Grudge to American shores.
Pesce explains:
“In the 2004 film, Yoko is seen taking over for someone, who is never named. We thought it would be fun if she was taking over for Fiona Landers.”
As for what makes the film so terrifying, Executive Producer Schuyler Weiss details its how the ghosts mess with their victims.
“These ghosts are themselves terrifying. But they don’t do anything to the people. They drive them to a kind of madness that leads them to do horrible things to themselves and each other. So the most terrifying menaces in the movie are the people themselves. The most gory, visceral, shocking moments are the things these characters to do themselves and to each other. That’s real horror.”
The Grudge hits theaters on January 3, 2020.
