It’s 2020 so it’s about time for another round of Gargoyle-revival stories. This is one of those ‘believe it when you see it happen’ situations. Nonetheless… this is still pretty exciting!
Beau DeMayo, writer of the Netflix original series The Witcher based on the novels and short stories by Andrzej Sapkowski, recently showed interest in bringing the flesh-by-night warriors back to life.
He told ComicBook.com
“I was probably more excited, and this’ll probably get me fired, I was more excited to watch Gargoyles when Disney+ dropped than any other show on there. I was like, oh, I’m watching Gargoyles as soon as that drops. But that was my stuff growing up. It’s strange, I’m a fanboy and I just go where the winds take me. Because the thing is is like, from an outside perspective, yes, what I do is really cool and awesome. But at the end of the day, it is a job and there are bills to pay. So I’ve just been lucky to land that stuff that pays the bills, that I love.”
DeMayo would go on to elaborate on the tone and subject matter that the Gargoyles tackled on any given afternoon. For a block of shows that contained series like Ducktails, Goof Troop, Tail Spin and Dark Wing Duck – it was an oddly mature show. It’s why it was so amazing.
DeMayo stated, “”I thought Jordan Peele was doing something with it, I thought I heard. But come on, how did that air for kids? There is some serious stuff going on in there.”
He added, “And then the third season they get into race politics because the mayor is turning everybody against the Gargoyles. But even that opening… I think it’s a four-part opening… their friends just get slaughtered, they get frozen in stone, they wake up and everybody’s dead and then Goliath’s ex-girlfriend has become a homicidal maniac, voiced by Commander Troi.”
At the moment, DeMayo has some buzz around him. The Witcher was a success and he’s already been blessed with a Marvel Studios gig in the upcoming ‘Moon Knight’ series. If Moon Knight is anything close to the quality of his Netflix endeavor, there’s little chance that Disney will turn down a pitch from him for one of their properties.
But let’s be realistic here. Moon Knight hasn’t begun production. Netflix will undoubtedly want another season or two of the Witcher. Best case scenario, if DeMayo gets to lend his talents to the Gargoyles – it won’t be for quite some time. I’m thinking 2023, at best. And not to inundate fans with more cold water, but this isn’t the first time we got our hopes up.
We [can] Live Again! #KeepBingingGargoyles on #DisneyPlus!! This is exactly how the #YoungJustice fandom brought YJ back. It can happen to #Gargoyles too!

If DeMayo is allowed to pitch his concept, it’s unclear whether it’d be a film or a series, live-action or animated – but it’d most likely go straight to Disney+.
The Gargoyles hold a special place in my heart as a fan of literature, and even as a Trekkie (many TNG actors lent their voice talents to the show). Here’s hoping this comes to fruition. What do you think about this?
