After Sony released the first trailer for the upcoming Venom film, an interesting theory has emerged which connects the Venom film to Avengers: Infinity War.
Not only does the Venom trailer provide context for the theory, but the Avengers: Infinity War Super Bowl spot really fuels the flame.
The gist of theory shows Spider-Man climbing up on to the strange, alien object or spaceship that is floating above New York City. In the Super Bowl spot, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is crawling all over this large object. And if you look closely at the background you will see, he’s way up in the atmosphere. Once Spider-Man gets into the spaceship or the alien structure, he will be attacked by the Venom symbiote. The symbiote will then attach itself to Spider-Man. Spider-Man and the symbiote will then eventually make their way back down to Earth.
Then in the opening scenes of Venom, the Venom symbiote will detach itself from Spider-Man or Spider-Man will remove it. Voila, Venom is now connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe besides the much rumored Tom Holland cameo.
Comic Book Cast 2 explains:
Like Comic Book Cast 2, I don’t really buy this theory. It seems too cheap of a way to introduce the Venom symbiote and doesn’t appear to give Spider-Man much of a role in Avengers: Infinity War. The theory also seems to discount the huge emergency response scene from the Venom trailer. I believe that’s the accident that brings the symbiote down to Earth.
The Spider-Verse
I also think the Venom movie might take place in a completely different universe than what we have seen so far in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. From the trailer, there doesn’t appear to any real fall out from Thanos’ invasion which you would expect would have global consequences. It’s more than likely, Venom is connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe through the upcoming animated film Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.
The most recent reports indicate Tom Hardy has been voice-cast as Venom for the animated film. Plus the animated film will also showcase an older Peter Parker voiced by John Krasinski. The Venom live-action film might take place in this Spider-Verse and the rumored Tom Holland cameo might be an after-credit scene where he discovers the Spider-Verse and gives Spider-Man access to it. It would be an ingenious way of connecting the two universes, but also keeping them at arms-length because only Spider-Man would have the technology and knowledge to access the Spider-Verse.
What do you think? Do you think the Venom symbiote will show up in Avengers: Infinity War or will Sony and Marvel Studios keep the two universes at arms-length?
