**Warning Potential Spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War Below**
Thor’s mighty hammer Mjolnir was mercilessly crushed at the beginning of last year’s Thor: Ragnarok by Thor’s estranged sister and goddess of death, Hela.
But that didn’t stop the God of Thunder from taking the battle to not only Hela, but the Grandmaster and his champion, the Incredible Hulk.
In one of the most iconic scenes from the film, Thor wields a club and a shield as he battles the Incredible Hulk. Later, in the film he would wield two swords as he takes on Hela in a battle for Asgard.
Many wondered if Thor would get a new weapon in the upcoming epic Avengers: Infinity War. There have been previous toy leaks showing a weapon that looks extremely similar to Ultimate Thor’s Mjolnir. It acts as both an axe and a hammer. Others have suggested he might use his axe, Jarnbjorn.
However, a new toy leak appears to unveil the name of Thor’s new weapon, Stormbreaker.
Stormbreaker should be familiar to many comics fans. The mighty weapon was created following the battle between Thor and Beta Ray Bill at Skartheim. Despite defeating Thor, Bill felt Mjolnir belonged to Thor. In order to assuage Bill’s guilt and reach a compromise, Odin ordered the Dwarves of Nidavellir to craft a new hammer made specifically for Beta Ray Bill. This new hammer would use the same Uru metal as Mjolnir and be forged by the dwarven blacksmith Eitri. Odin would then bless the hammer allowing Beta Ray Bill to return to his mortal Korbinite form if he struck the ground with the hammer.
In the comics, Stormbreaker acts very similar to Mjolnir. It can be recalled after being thrown as well as summoned to him across vast distances. The hammer grants flight, and can also absorb, magnify, and return any type of force. The hammer can also be used as an offensive weapon to project powerful blasts of mystical energy. It also allows its wielder to survive in space. Finally, the hammer can be used to detect energy and even create a portal to any desired dimension.
In the hands of Thor, it will be a mighty weapon.
It makes sense Thor would use Stormbreaker. In Thor: Ragnarok, Marvel unveiled that Beta Ray Bill existed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as his face was seen on the Grandmaster’s gladiatorial pit on Sakaar indicating he was one of the Grandmaster’s former champions.
Interestingly, this new weapon appears to have other qualities than the one from the comics. If you look at the handle, it looks extremely similar to Groot. One theory indicates Thor, Teen Groot, and Rocket seek out the Dwarf King Eitri who forged Mjolnir as well as the Infinity Gauntlet. Unfortunately, Eitri’s hands have been cut off by Thanos preventing him from creating a weapon to rival the Infinity Gauntlet. However, while they visit Eitri, Thor and company discover the axe, Jarnbjorn. However, the axe is missing a handle. Teen Groot gives his wood to form the handle of the weapon.
