In the opinion of Doctor Who star David Tennant, not only is he fed up with the ongoing “weaponisation” of transgender rights, but he also feels that those who continue to take such active issue with the concept should just “f–k off and let people be.”
The fan-favorite Tenth Doctor actor offered his take on the current transgenderism discourse while speaking with fans during a May 5th appearance at the Proud Nerd: Angels, Demons, and Doctors convention in Goch, Germany.
Pressed by a fan, who themselves identify as transgender, whether his “relationship with gender expression, masculinity, and femininity” had “changed over the years”, Tennant recalled, “”When I was a kid, the idea of being non-binary wasn’t something that existed.”
“It wasn’t a concept,” he added, as seen in a TikTok video provided by the fan who asked the question, @mandlebougie. “I’ve seen that emerge and people are able to express themselves through that. It only ever seems positive as far as I can see.”
To this end, Tennant then recalled, “When I was a teenager, I remember gay rights being weaponised politically. That always felt ugly and nasty. We look back on that, 30 years later, and those people are clearly on the wrong side of history.”
“Now, there is a similar weaponisation of these topics being taken by mostly the right wing, or certain sections of society, to create friction and conflict and division where it needn’t be,” he continued in his thoughts. “It’s just about people being themselves. You don’t need to be bothered about it. F–k off and let people be.”
Drawing his answer to the question to a close, the Marvel’s Jessica Jones actor ultimately asserted, “It’s that sense of just wanting people to be allowed to exist, and I think that there are, now, ways of expressing gender, identity, sexuality, that are more nuanced than they once were and that only seems to be positive.”
“If that helps people to know who they are, say who they are, and communicate to the world who they are – it’s just common sense, really,” he concluded.
Notably, this is not the first time Tennant has publicly declared his support for transgender individuals and their rights.
In 2023, during a London stop on his press tour for Amazon’s adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Good Omens, the actor not only wore a ‘non-binary pride’ pin on his jacket’s lapel, but underneath sported a shirt that read ‘Leave trans kids alone you absolute freaks’.
