HBO Max released a new clip of the upcoming The Suicide Squad spin-off series Peacemaker starring John Cena.
Take a look.
In the clip, Cena’s Peacemaker is seen exiting his patriotic-themed vehicle as he goes to meet up with a number of individuals employed Amanda Waller for breakfast.
The individuals use excessive profanity to make fun of Peacemaker, his car, and his uniform. As he sits down he’s further grilled about his uniform.
He is eventually asked about why he has a bald eagle in his car. Peacemaker responds, “That’s Eagly.” His associates then proceed to mock his pet eagle. As the clip ends, Peacemaker whispers under his breath, “Jealous of a guy’s pet eagle much?”
The Peacemaker series was announced back in September 2020. When it was announced the show’s creator James Gunn stated it “is an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest douchebag.”
He added, “I’m excited to expand The Suicide Squad and bring this character from the DC film universe to the full breadth of a series. And of course, to be able to work again with John, Peter, and my friends at Warner Bros. is the icing on the cake.”
Gunn would reiterate those comments while speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in August 2021. When asked what the genre of the show was, Gunn stated, “There are a lot of similarities to The Suicide Squad in that it’s no holds barred, but there are also a lot of things that are very different, in that it’s quieter in some ways.”
He continued, “It’s very specifically about a different group of people, so it’s a little bit more about society.”
“One of the leads is Peacemaker and one of the leads is Danielle Brooks, who plays Leota Adebayo. And she has a very different political view of the world than Peacemaker does. So it’s just a little bit about what’s going on in the world, but also being a TV show, you really do have more time to delve much deeper into these characters and much more deeply into the drama and comedy of them,” Gunn explained.
The director clarified, “So it has a lot of similarities, but it’s even more grounded, more natural and more real. But it’s still within a big science-fiction storyline that lasts for one season.”
As for what the series is about, in the press release from September HBO Max explained the series “will explore the origins of the Peacemaker character, the master of weapons from the highly anticipated upcoming The Suicide Squad film, in the new Max Original action-adventure-comedy series Peacemaker.”
They added, “The series will explore the origins of the character that Cena will play in the upcoming film, a man who believes in peace at any cost — no matter how many people he has to kill to get it.”
The first season is expected to be eight episodes long. It is expected to air on HBO Max sometime in January 2022.
