As Gotham now moves forward from its winter finale, one of Batman’s most dangerous enemies will be entering the fray. Ra’s al Ghul! The Caped Crusader and Ra’s have a long history in the comics, movies, and video games. He’s one of Batman’s most dangerous foes. And he’s about to cause some mayhem as he makes Gotham his new home.
Alexander Siddig, a talented and very well known actor has been cast as Ra’s al Ghul. Some of his best-known works include shows such as 24, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Game of Thrones. Siddig’s Ra’s al Ghul will be introduced as Bruce Wayne uncovers the mysteries of the Court of Owls and reveals the man pulling its strings.
Ra’s al Ghul has had a complicated relationship with Batman throughout the comics. He made his first appearance in 1971 in Batman #232 from creators Julius Swchwartz, Dennis O’Neil, and Neal Adams. He is the grandfather of Bruce’s child, Damian Wayne. And he once believed Bruce Wayne to be his potential heir due to the relationship with his daughter, Talia. He definitely admires Bruce’s intellect and has kept the identity of Batman a secret.
Ra’s al Ghul is considered by many readers to be one of, if not the most dangerous of Batman’s foes. He is the leader of the League of Assassins and controls the Lazarus Pit which allows him to extend his life, but comes at the cost of his sanity.
Ra’s al Ghul has previously appeared in Christopher Nolan’s films Batman Begins and The Dark Knight Rises, where he was portrayed by Liam Neeson. More recently he was on Arrow portrayed by Matthew Nable.
Gotham will return to FOX on Monday, April 24 at 8 p.m. There will be eight more episodes before season three draws to a close.
