Jessica Jones Renewed for Second Season

*This post contains spoilers for Netflix’s Jessica Jones Season 1*

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix announced at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour that Jessica Jones will return for a second season.

The drama premiered in November of last year and was the second of five planned Marvel dramas following the release of Daredevil last spring. Netflix also has a second season of Daredevil planned to debut on March 18, 2016. Also in the pipeline are Luke Cage and Iron Fist series followed up with The Defenders.

The show’s success landed Jessica Jones’ leading lady Krysten Ritter a nomination for Best Actress in a Drama at the Critics’ Choice Awards.

Jessica Jones is executive produced by showrunner Melissa Rosenberg and Liz Friedman with oversight from Marvel’s Jeph Loeb.

As of now, the second season is scheduled for 13 episodes, but a premiere date has not been set. Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos noted, “The Defenders production will really determine” premiere dates for upcoming seasons.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that Melissa Rosenberg hopes the second season will arrive before The Defenders. “There certainly is storytelling wise. The question becomes is there actual time? There are logistics involved, because Defenders has to shoot by a certain time, contractually,” she said. “Actually, I’m not sure; I’m not at all involved in those conversations, much to my dismay. The first question is whether or not we will even get a second season. The second question is, if so, when? Will it be before The Defenders or after? I’d certainly love it to be before but there are things that play into that — time, availability.”

David Tenant, who portrayed Kilgrave opposite Ritter as the show’s villain, is not expected to return for the second season as his character was summarily eliminated in the season one finale.
