According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jonathan Schaech will make his debut appearance as Jonah Hex, the Western antihero, in DC’s Legends of Tomorrow Old West-set episode 11 with the possibility of reoccurring appearances.
Jonah Hex was originally created by John Albano and Tony DeZuniga as a surly and cynical bounty hunter. He is bound by a personal code of honor where he protects and avenges the innocent. The character is recognizable by the horrible scarring on the right side of his face. Josh Brolin most recently played the character in a 2010 film adaptation.
DC’s Legends of Tomorrow looks to reimagine the character as “a morally ambiguous gunslinger with a penchant for danger.” At the time of the Legends arrival in the small town of Salvation, Hex is already a veteran gunslinger dealing with a number of outlaws and gangs and surprisingly he isn’t unfamiliar with time travel. It’s unclear whether he will be friend or foe. His comic history indicates he could be foe having gun downed Superman with Kryptonite bullets in Superman/Batman #16 and giving Batman a belly wound in Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne.
“Ever since we decided that Legends would involve time-travel, we were eager to do a story set in the Old West,” executive producer Marc Guggenheim previously said about bringing Jonah Hex to Legends. “But if you’re going to do a story set in the DC Universe version of the Old West, you simply must include Jonah Hex in it. We’re thrilled about bringing another well known, beloved DC character to television.”
Jonathan Schaech is known for his role in the 1996 film That Thing You Do, but has more recently appeared on ABC’s Quantico, the History Channel miniseries Texas Rising and Fox’s Sleepy Hollow.
