The CW’s next crossover event, Crisis on Infinite Earths, is shaping up to be huge. In fact, it is taking on multiverse proportions. Characters from across DC’s film and television continuity throughout the years are reportedly ready for an appearance.
That includes incarnations from Warner Bros.’ current theatrical Extended Universe, according to an exclusive by Cosmic Book News. An anonymous source at San Diego Comic-Con told the site Crisis “will feature characters from all or most of the DC appearances on TV and from some of the movies.”
Specifics are still being worked out but studio lawyers and execs are on edge, reportedly, over what this ambitious plan will cost. If they and the Arrowverse people can’t reach terms, showrunners might resort to simple clips from movies like Man of Steel. In short, a flyby from Henry Cavill would have to do.
DCEU characters and actors won’t take precedence since the crossover is a CW affair, but Warner wants to showcase more alternate Earths than they ever have before. Connecting the DCEU to the overarching multiverse is a priority.
Two Supermen we can confirm for Crisis are the returning Tyler Hoechlin (Superman on Supergirl) and someone already part of the Arrowverse roster. Former Superman Brandon Routh will wear the cape one more time as the Superman from Kingdom Come. Routh played the Man of Steel in Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns and he portrays The Atom on Legends Of Tomorrow.
Tom Welling will also be back as the Clark Kent/Superman from the Smallville universe, a role he played for a full decade. Joining him is Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman once again, the part that made her famous in the 1970s. Carter stayed in the DC spotlight with guest spots on Smallville and Supergirl.
Also recalling that campier era will be Burt Ward who is reprising his Robin from the 60s Batman TV show. As a tribute to Adam West, the Batman of that Earth will already be dead and will not be recast. West, who best embodied that incarnation of the Caped Crusader, passed away in 2017 and fittingly the role was all but retired like a jersey number.
Crossovers are popular over at The CW. Crisis on Infinite Earths will continue the trend but on a scale never before seen. No expense may be spared.
Crisis is based on a famous storyline from the 80s that reset DC continuity and condensed all threads of reality into one timeline that was the status quo until the 2000s. Much like then, the event will play into Warner’s future plans for TV and streaming.
