A Galaxy Far Away Coming to the Small Screen
A Star Wars TV series. So much potential for amazing storytelling and so much potential for a downward spiral into ridiculousness. It’s a thin line. But it’s one that the amazingly-talented Jon Favreau is looking to tread in his next endeavor. After years of speculation, a live-action TV series was recently announced with Favreau behind the camera. Considering his recent track record, minus most of Cowboys and Aliens, fans were elated to hear his name attached to the show. After creating the Marvel Cinematic Universe and reinventing The Jungle Book, he can do anything.
Like any Star Wars project, fans are clamoring for any details. The cast, the cultures, the setting… With Star Wars in the name there’s plenty of questions for the highly-anticipated show. Now, we might have some answers.
According to a report by Making Star Wars, the show will be about the chaos on the planet Mandalore:
“It sounds like when the Empire falls, Mandalore falls into a state of turmoil and the series is about restoring Mandalore to its former self and how Mandalore sways will have huge galactic ramifications.”
Some Star Wars fans might have some questions there. Like what exactly is Mandalore?
The Most Famous Mandalorian of All Time
So let’s get something straight. Technically, Boba Fett isn’t a Mandalorian. He is a clone of his Father, Jango Fett, who was supposedly born on the Mandalorian planet of Concord Dawn. Both Fetts wore Mandalorian armor with different colors. But otherwise did not resemble the culture from which it came. Mandalorians are a proud warrior culture, at least in the Extended Universe. An interesting and honorable people who might have disappeared with the rest of the EU. However, it seems many fan-favorite aspects of the EU are coming back in some capacity. Why not bring back the warrior-based culture of Mandalore that was established in the novels and cemented in games like Star Wars: The Old Republic?
In fact, Mandalore and its people were highly visible in George Lucas and Dave Filoni’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series. Mandalore would deal with its own internal problems as both the Republic and the Separatists made their own external moves.
The animated series is actually returning and will further delve into the conflict in and around Mandalore.
As for the plot, the key words seem to be “turmoil” and “restoration.” Favreau could follow in the steps of Star Wars Rebels, which had a wonderful arc for Sabine Wren and the Mandalorians. Rebuilding their warrior culture with the “Darksaber.” Were that story to align with the fall of the Empire, the new characters could rebuild from there.
Or it’s possible that Mandalore simply sided with the Empire and the Empire lost. Or, if the plot would directly involve Boba Fett, perhaps his association with Darth Vader could cost Mandalore it’s political standing and warrior status throughout the known Galaxy. Meaning that “restoration” would have to do with their image and not their architecture.
It’s even possible that the TV series might actually fulfill many Star Wars fans wishes by exploring the Old Republic. The Mandalorians actually waged war against the Republic in what was known as The Mandalorian Wars. They were eventually defeated by two Jedi, Revan and Malak. After defeating the Mandalorians, Revan would hide the symbol of their leadership, the Mask of Mandalore.
The anticipation is going to kill fans until that very first trailer. But still, one question lingers. Fan fatigue might have hurt [easyazon_link identifier=”B07D8J737S” locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Solo: A Star Wars Story[/easyazon_link], but will it hurt this new series? Fans around the world will have to wait a see.
