Star Wars Rumor: Obi-Wan Kenobi Returning for Disney+ Show

Objectively the Star Wars prequel trilogy was horrible. However, the one silver lining was definitely Ewan McGregor as Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Ewan McGregor to the Small Screen

An insider has recently revealed to We Got This Covered that Obi-Wan Kenobi is set to have his own TV show via Disney+ and Ewan McGregor is going to portray him. We Got This Covered reports, “details are scarce right now. It seems the House of Mouse is planning to make an official announcement in the near future, so be sure to stay tuned.”

If this rumor pans out to be true, it would join the rumored Boba Fett series that is reportedly in the works as well as the confirmed Cassian Andor series and Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian.  The Mandalorian was the first Star Wars show announced and will be available on the new streaming service when it debuts in November.

False Hopes?

In 2017 there was a reported Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off movie with Ewan McGregor in the titular role though nothing was officially announced by Disney or Lucasfilms. It is believed the new TV series will replace the movie. TMZ reported in 2018 that the movie had a director, plot and even a working title, but nothing came of the report. Stephen Daldry was working on Obi-Wan: A Star Wars Story under the working name Joshua Tree.  The plot according to TMZ, “Obi-Wan is on Tatooine being an elusive hermit and stuff. [Kenobi] secretly watches over an infant Luke Skywalker, whom he delivered to his uncle, Owen. Tensions between the local farmers and a tribe of Sand People — headed by a ruthless war chief — eventually brings Obi outta hiding … and into Jedi kickass mode.”

Former British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson had also hinted that an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie was going to film in Northern Ireland. He even noted that George Lucas was returning to the direct the film!

Johnson stated, ““Which was the biggest grossing movie last year? Star Wars and where does George Lucas propose to make a follow up about Obi-Wan Kenobi? Northern Ireland.”

Kenobi is considered a fan-favorite, being ranked as #37 on the American Film Institute’s 100 Best Characters list. Fans have clamored for a spin-off movie or series and are desperate to see their favorite character on screen again.
