Stargate fans led by Stargate SG-1, Stargate: Atlantis, SGU Stargate Universe, and Dark Matter producer Joseph Mallozzi will launch a social media campaign in order to convince MGM to launch a brand new in-canon Stargate television series.
Mallozzi explains the social media campaign has a simple mission:
Let MGM know that Stargate fandom remains strong and eager to support a new series that has its roots in the television franchise Brad Wright and Robert Cooper created. Convince them that they don’t have to choose between old fans and new viewers. By green lighting an in-canon fourth series that breaks new ground, introducing new characters, new settings, and new stories, they – and fandom – they can have the best of both worlds.
The campaign will begin on Friday, March 9th at 6:00 p.m. PST/9:00 p.m. EST in North America and Saturday, March 10 at 7:00 p.m. GMT for international fans.
The campaign will only take one hour, but does have some rules.
Mallozzi explains:
#1: FOLLOW – Make sure you’re following @StargateNow
#2: CHECK IN – Approximately 15 minutes before the appointed time, @StargateNow will be revealing that night’s unique hashtag. This hashtag should appear in all of your tweets. In the case of Dark Matter, for instance, one of the hashtag we used was #RockTheRaza.
#3: BE PROMPT – Start tweeting at the appointed time, but not before as it diminishes our efforts at trending.
#4: USE THE DEDICATED HASHTAG – Make sure your tweet includes that night’s dedicated hashtag.
#5: ONLY USE THAT ONE HASHTAG – For some reason, tweets with more than one hashtag don’t count toward trending so be sure to only use the hashtag of the night.
This isn’t the first time Joseph Mallozzi has organized a social media campaign. He previously organized one for Dark Matter last September. While that campaign ultimately was unsuccessful it paved the way for this Stargate campaign. And there is plenty to be hopeful for. Mallozzi explains, “there’s a key difference between [the Dark Matter campaign] and [the Stargate] one we’re about to launch: MGM really does care. They care about their shows and the people who produce them. They care science fiction. And, most importantly, they care about their fans.”
Jospeh Mallozzi reveals MGM has big plans not only for Stargate, but for more science fiction offerings. “If all goes well, in three years down the line, we could not only have a new Stargate on the platform, but several new scifi shows as well. Perhaps even a Dark Matter miniseries.”
And MGM already seems to be testing the waters. They launched Stargate Command which is described “as the official destination for all things STARGATE, including a variety of STARGATE content from the franchise’s nearly 25-year history. Visitors can read news, engage with content, get behind-the-scenes updates on the Stargate Origins production, and more. Furthermore, Stargate Origins episodes will debut on Stargate Command, and Episodes 4 – 10 will be available exclusively on the platform at least 30 days before anywhere else.”
Stargate Origins is a new Stargate series focusing on the story of scientist Catherine Langford’s discovery of the Stargate when she was a child. The show features 10-minute episodes and began streaming on February 15, 2018. New episodes are released each week.
Everything comes to a head on Friday, March 9 at 6:00 p.m. PST/9:00 p.m. EST when the night’s unique hashtag will be revealed and the Stargate social media campaign kicks into high gear.
