Will You Watch The Watchmen?!
It’s official, the world is getting more Watchmen whether or not Alan Moore wants it. First, Zack Snyder released a feature-length adaptation in 2009 which was a controversial film that some love and some hate. Now, one of the greatest stories in the history of comics is getting a series at HBO.
Variety recently confirmed that the Damon Lindelof-helmed show has received a full series order. HBO also released this brief description of the upcoming show, “Watchmen’ embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel while attempting to break new ground of its own.” Interesting. Not a direct adaption, but a story that will clearly be connected to the Watchmen story.
Like any other HBO series, the show has an incredible cast. The characters haven’t been announced yet but the cast includes: Regina King, Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Adelaide Clemens, Andrew Howard, Tom Mison, Frances Fisher, Jacob Ming-Trent, Sara Vickers, Dylan Schombing, Lily Rose Smith, and Adelynn Spoon.
That’s right, Abdul-Mateen II (Black Manta) and Jeremy Irons (Alfred) are working double-time in the DC Universe. The series is being written by Damon Lindelof, of Prometheus, Lost and The Leftovers fame. This show has been on the writer’s mind for some time. For a small look at what the writer is going for check out this 5-page letter he posted on Instagram!
Now, the show is becoming a reality.
Mature Content
HBO is famous for its “mature content.” In a way, that’s making fun of the sometimes egregious nudity in their shows. It also refers to the fact that they create mature television shows with important, modern themes that other networks don’t. Elevating the material you watch at home with TV series that are just as dramatic and outstanding as the independent films at your local theater. While we can’t speak for the show’s quality, it looks like it will have every bit of adult-themed storytelling that the graphic novel did.
Leaked photos of the set reveal a hint to a major character as well as a major storyline.

Older superhero “Hooded Justice” makes an appearance in the photographs. And as many have speculated over the years, the character’s outfit is clearly a reference to the infamous “KKK.” The series will apparently tell a story involving the character’s history with the organization. A possible look at the character appears here.

Beware of Minor Spoilers, Ye Who Reads Beyond this Point
It’s unclear whether or not the next image is actually a spoiler or not. Adrian Veidt, otherwise known as Ozymandias, is one of the most important characters of the original story. Actually, he was its antagonist. In the recent comic series Doomsday Clock, Adrian Veidt has a massive tumor he’s trying to find a cure for.
We also recently posted a few more leaked photos from the set. Including this reveal, or piece of misdirection, regarding the fate of one of the original characters.
Could this mean the HBO series takes place after Geoff John’s latest comic? Only a trailer can answer that question.
Lindelof’s letter was wonderfully encouraging. He regards the source material as holy and just as highly as everyone else in the comic realm. He promises fans that this series is the “New Testament” to the original 12 issues’ “Old Testament.” A powerful metaphor that could speak volumes to the ambitiousness of the upcoming show.
While HBO has yet to reveal any official looks at the show, they did share one minor teaser.
Exciting and simple. “Nothing Ever Ends” is the kind of promise that draws goosebumps. The show looks like an intriguing mix of homage and new ground. A brand new storytelling adventure for arguably the greatest TV network of all time and one of the most interesting screenwriters of the last few years.
HBO and Damon Lindelof’s latest series premieres sometime in 2019.
