Captain America Appears to Die as Square Enix Showcases Marvel’s Avengers

Captain America appears to perish in a coordinated attack that involves the Taskmaster in the new trailer for Marvel’s Avengers.

The game will feature the ability for single play as well as co-op. The game does not tie into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but is Crystal Dynamics’ interpretation of the characters.

The story begins on Avengers Day as the Avengers open their headquarters for the West Coast Avengers. However, the day goes awry. A helicarrier equipped with an experimental energy source is raided.  The ensuing raid, which involves Taskmaster, results in massive destruction to the city of San Francisco. The Avengers are outlawed after being blamed for the tragedy.

In an exclusive clip, the energy source is revealed to be a Terrigen reactor that was unstable. Despite the reactors instability, Iron Man decided to parade it to the world.

However, five years after the raid, a horrific evil surfaces and the Avengers must reassemble in order to take on this foe.

Bill Roseman, Vice President and Creative Director at Marvel Games, emphasizes that the story is an “all new original story.” He notes it showcases “authentic Marvel heroism and humanity.” He adds, “It’s about losing what matters to you most and fighting to get it back.”

Shaun Escayg the Creative Director at Crystal Dynamics adds, “Most importantly, this is a story about self-acceptance in the face of adversity. About embracing our individual powers and learning that together we are mighty.”

While it appears that Captain America might have perished in the trailer, Roseman indicates that Captain America will lead the team. Other characters featured in the game include Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, Iron Man. They also tease Hank Pym aka Ant-Man, and that other heroes will be added in the future.

The game will feature the voice acting talent of Troy Baker, who plays Bruce Banner, Jeff Shine who will play Captain America, Travis Willingham, who will play Thor, Laura Bailey plays Black Widow, and Nolan North voices Iron Man.

Scott Amos Head of Studio at Crystal Dynamics and Meagan Marie the Senior Community and Social Media Manager at Crystal Dynamics announced they already have multiple years of content lined up for the game.

Marie states, “Marvel’s Avengers delivers a narrative over multiple years with exciting new content released on a regular basis.” Amos notes, “You and your friends are stronger together. You will assemble into teams of up to 4 players online where you can master extraordinary abilities. Where you can customize a growing roster of heroes. And defend the Earth from ever escalating threats.”

Amos continues, “Every new superhero and every new region will be delivered at no additional cost.”

Marie states, “We won’t have random loot boxes or pay to win scenarios.”

The game will release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Stadia, and PC. They will also be providing exclusives for PlayStation users that include early Beta access as well as other benefits announced.

The game will be available on May 15, 2020.
