Capcom has confirmed that the upcoming Marvel Vs. Capcom Fighting Collection will be removing some…let’s say, unfortunate images from The Punisher‘s ending cinematic.

One of, if not the most hype reveal of the entire Summer Games Fest 2024 season, the Marvel Vs. Capcom Fighting Collection will see the developer’s entire suite of 2D-era, Marvel fighting games made available on the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch consoles, including X-Men Children of the Atom, Marvel Super Heroes, X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, Marvel vs. Capcom and Marvel vs. Capcom 2.
And though not a fighting game in the least, in honor of it being the very first game produced as part of Capcom and Marvel’s video game partnership, the collection will also notably include The Punisher arcade game.
Released in 1993, the side-scrolling beat ’em up puts players in the shoes of either Frank Castle or Nick Fury and tasks them with punching, kicking, and shooting their way across the United States in order to take revenge on the Kingpin for his cold-blooded killing of the titular hero’s family.
Following the Collection‘s initial announcement, Capcom would subsequently release a set of ‘patch notes’ confirming that each one of the re-released titles would be receiving a variety of feature changes.
While most titles will simply gain the option to toggle screen flashing effects and see the addition of previously-unplayable boss characters (and in the case of Anita in Marvel Super Heroes, unfinished demo characters) to their rosters, Marvel Vs. Capcom and The Punisher will be subject to additional ‘graphical modifications’.
In terms of the former, the crossover fighter will apparently see such changes made to “a number” of its playable stages.
Though Capcom did not specify which stages or what elements therein would ultimately be modified, current speculation suggests that these changes will serve to reduce the flashing elements of the backgrounds themselves, such as the constantly-flickering character screens seen in Avengers HQ or the Headquarter of Evil.
As for The Punisher, the arcade classic will be added to the collection without “some images used in the ending of the game in the Japanese version.”
Again, Capcom did not detail which specific images would be removed from the game’s ending.
However, as anyone who ever managed to successfully take down the Kingpin can attest, they’re likely to be the two images of the then-standing Twin Towers (the blue one fading into the yellow one) that serve as its final ending screen.
The Marvel Vs. Capcom Fighting Collection is set to take players for a ride sometime in 2024.
