Black Panther Makes Marvel Cinematic Universe History in First 24 Hours of Ticket Presales

Black Panther Chadwick Boseman

Marvel Studios’ upcoming Black Panther film is already making Marvel Cinematic Universe history. The film broke Fandango’s first 24 hours of pre-sale record toppling the previous record-holder, Captain America: Civil War. Interestingly enough, Civil War is when we were first introduced to the film version of Black Panther.

“Black Panther is riding an incredible wave of momentum right now,” says Fandango Editor Erik Davis. “It’s one of the biggest and most anticipated movies to ever open in the month of February, and its trailers have electrified the Internet. Tickets have been going fast ever since presales started on Fandango late Monday.”

It’s no surprise that Black Panther would already be setting records. Fandango polled more than 8,000 moviegoers and found out that Black Panther was ranked the second most anticipated film behind Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War. In the same poll, they discovered Michael B. Jordan’s Erik Killmonger was one of 2018’s most anticipated screen villains while co-stars Danai Gurira and Winston Duke were chosen as rising stars of 2018.

With the news of Black Panther breaking the Fandango 24 hour pre-sale record, Deadline believes the film could have one of the highest openings for a February movie of all time. In fact, they believe it could have the best opening ever beating Fox’s Deadpool which opened up to $132.4 million. However, current estimates believe the movie will only open to $80-$85 million with the possibility of $100 million. Captain America: Civil War opened the first week of May with $179 million back in 2016.

Black Panther is definitely on track to be a box office smash this year.

Black Panther is directed by Ryan Coogler. The film stars Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther, Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Andy Serkis as Klaw, Danai Gurira as Okoye, and Winston Duke as M’Baku.

Black Panther comes to theaters on February 16, 2017.
