Here’s How Han Solo First Meets Chewbacca
**Warning Spoilers for Solo: A Star Wars Story Below**
Solo: A Star Wars Story shed some significant light on the back story of the galaxy’s favorite smuggler, Han Solo. And one of those moments was how the lovable Wookie, Chewbacca, first met the dashing smuggler, Han Solo.
If you were expecting the two might have met at a cantina in the Outer Rim or Chewbacca might have already been part of a smuggling operation that Han joins, you would be wrong. Han Solo meets Chewbacca in a death pit, much like the one seen in Return of the Jedi that housed the ferocious rancor in Jabba the Hutt’s palace.
This time Chewbacca serves as the Rancor and he is even referred to as the beast. Han Solo meets Chewbacca when he is thrown into the pit where the beast aka Chewbacca is supposed to eat him.
However, the full story is a little more complicated than that. Han Solo is actually fighting for the Empire on an unnamed planet. He comes across Tobias Beckett and his crew, who are looking to steal an Imperial cargo ship. Han Solo sees them as a way out of his Imperial life and he attempts to join them. Unfortunately, Beckett and his crew don’t want to be bothered and Becket reports that Han Solo had deserted from the Empire. The Lieutenant in charge condemns Han Solo to death by having him eaten by the beast.
As I mentioned previously, Chewbacca is actually the beast. Fortunately, for Han Solo he knows how to speak the Wookie language and is able to devise a plan for the two of them to escape. The two fake that they are fighting each other all the while Chewbacca is hammering at a pivotal pole that is keeping a platform secure. Chewbacca is able to eventually knock the pole down and bring the platform crashing down presumably killing the two Stormtroopers who were overseeing the fight.
Han and Chewbacca then escape the pit and seek out Tobias Beckett and his crew, who eventually take the two of them in due to Chewbacca’s strength as a Wookie. And that’s how Han Solo and Chewbacca first met each other.
