Victor Zsasz has become a mainstay in DC Comics live-action villainy. Most recently he was portrayed by Anthony Carrigan on Fox’s Gotham series. He also had an extremely minor role in Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins where he was portrayed by Tim Booth. Zsasz also featured prominently in Rocksteady Studios’ [easyazon_link identifier=”B007SRM5MO” locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Batman: Arkham City[/easyazon_link] where he was voiced by Danny Jacobs.
Zsasz first appeared in DC Comics in June 1992 in [easyazon_link identifier=”B0046DQVDM” locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Batman: Shadow the Bat #1[/easyazon_link]. He was created by Alan Grant and Norm Breyfogle. Zsasz is a sadistic serial killer who marks his body for each kill he has been made. The supervillain’s entire body is normally depicted with tally marks indicating the sheer amount of people he has murdered.
Much like a number of other Gotham villains, Zsasz also comes from money. n fact, he was the head of an international corporation. However, after his parents die, Zsasz falls into depression and turns to gambling. He eventually loses it all to the Penguin. The loss of all his wealth drives him to nearly commit suicide by jumping off the Gotham Bridge. However, he is saved by a homeless man who attempts to rob him with a knife. Zsasz rewards the man’s gift by savagely killing him, coming to the conclusion that all life is meaningless. Zsasz then sets out to liberate others from their meaningless lives.
Messina’s Zsasz won’t be the only DC Comics mainstay to be joining Robbie’s Harley Quinn. He will be joined by Huntress, Black Mask, and Black Canary.
Interestingly enough, Zsasz recalls his origin story to a therapist while he’s locked in Arkham Asylum. It’s possible Robbie’s Harley Quinn might revert to her old persona in Harleen Quinzel to extract information from Zsasz in order to take help her and what we can only assume will be her newfound allies in Huntress and Black Canary take down Black Mask.
What do you think of Messina’s new look? Do you think he’s getting ready to take on the role of Zsasz? How do you think Zsasz will be used in Birds of Prey?
