A new rumor indicates actor Ewan McGregor will reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in an upcoming Disney+ Star Wars series.

The rumor comes from Cinelinx who report:

“According to two separate sources, I’ve heard that Ewan McGregor has actually put pen to paper and inked a contract to return as the iconic Jedi Master.”

Along with their report that McGregor has signed on to return as Obi-Wan Kenobi, they speculate an announcement about about the series could be made at the upcoming D23 show and convention.

Before the rumor about the Disney+ show began swirling there had been rumors that an Obi-Wan Kenobi film was in development. However, Ewan McGregor had denied any involvement in a possible film. Back in January of 2018, Ewan stated, “Just that. There’s a lot of talk, and I’d be happy to play [Obi-Wan] again. But there’s no plan at the moment.” (Related: Ewan McGregor Gives Update on His Involvement with Possible Obi-Wan Kenobi Film)

In August of 2018, he would reiterate, “I would totally do it, of course. There’s no plans, as such, to do it as far as I know.” (Related: Ewan McGregor Says There Are “No Plans” For An Obi-Wan Kenobi Film)

This new rumor comes at a time when the Star Wars brand is facing some harsh criticism as Disney CEO Bob Iger admitted their latest Star Wars attraction at Disneyland, Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge has had lower than usual attendance. Disney also announced their Star Wars merchandising is down. On top of that they recently cancelled the animated series Star Wars Resistance after just two seasons.

This new rumor could be what Disney and Lucasfilm need to get interest built back up for Star Wars.
