New Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Footage Looks Extremely Similar to Game of Thrones Final Season
New Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker footage seen in the recently released trailer looks extremely similar to the final episode of Game of Thrones.
YouTuber That Star Wars Girl took to Twitter to point out the similarities. She shared a screenshot of Rey standing next to Palpatine’s destroyed throne chair from the Death Star as Kylo Ren looks up at her.
She then shared a screenshot from the final episode of Game of Thrones as Daenerys Targaryen stands next to the Iron Throne and looks down on Jon Snow.

Along with the two photos she asked on Twitter, “Do you guys think JJ just doesn’t care about blatantly copying or do you think he had some help?”
She added, “More and more evidence as to why Dan&Dave took that 2year hiatus & rushed the last season of GOT. They’re not fooling anyone. #notmystarwars.”

While this is the only comparison that That Star Wars Girl makes, there are definitely a number of other similarities to the final season of Game of Thrones.

The inclusion of space horses charging against a seemingly unbeatable foe was seen in the trailer. The Dothraki made a similar charge against the Night King and his forces.
There is also the inclusion of a massive throne similar to the Iron Throne seen in Game of Thrones. The design of the throne in The Rise of Skywalker trailer does resemble the Iron Throne with the way the swords shoot out from it.
But as Disney Star Wars Is Dumb points out, the image appears to be inspired from original Ralph McQuarrie Star Wars artwork from the 80s.
Rey is even wielding a dagger in one scene in the trailer. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that this dagger could be used to land the killing blow against Palpatine similar to how Arya used her Valyrian steel dagger to slay the Night King.

But what might be the most interesting part of That Star Wars Girl’s tweet is the idea that Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and DB Weiss might have actually worked on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
The two creators had been previously announced to work on their own Star Wars series of movies. However, recent reports indicated that deal might be up in the air.
The Hollywood Reporter noted, “Sources say the Thrones pair is writing a treatment for a Star Wars trilogy and is committed to penning at least one of the films.” That’s a far cry from the previously announced series of films.
But maybe more importantly Bob Iger discussed the Game of Thrones pair.
“We did a deal with David Benioff and D.B Weiss, who are famous for Game Of Thrones, and the next movie that we release will be theirs. And we’re not saying anything more about that.”
Now, at the time that statement seemed to indicate that the Star Wars movie scheduled to be released in 2022, would be the Star Wars film Benioff and Weiss would work on.
However, it’s possible Iger was actually meaning The Rise of Skywalker.
What do you make of the similarities between Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and the final season of Game of Thrones? Do you think it’s just a coincidence? Was Lucasfilm trying to channel the success of Game of Thrones? Did Benioff and Weiss work on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker? Or are we reading way too much into it? Were there any other similarities between The Rise of Skywalker and Game of Thrones that you saw?
