Peter Sarsgaard Cast in The Batman for an Undisclosed Role

Peter Sarsgaard, star of Orphan and this year’s The Sound of Silence, is the newest person to be cast in the growing ensemble of The Batman.

Writer-director Matt Reeves revealed Sarsgaard as his latest addition Friday on Twitter with a GIF of the actor waving. The social media microblog site is where Reeves has been disclosing most of his casting choices, including John Turturro most recently.

Who Sarsgaard is playing remains heretofore a mystery but there is heavy speculation. Sources close to The Hollywood Reporter suspect he is playing a district attorney – none other than Harvey Dent who, scarred by acid, turns on Batman and the law to become Two-Face.

Matthew McConaughey was previously rumored as in the running to play Dent. He even received a grisly fan-art imagining by English graphic artist Boss Logic.

As was reported in regards to McConaughey, don’t be shocked if Sarsgaard doesn’t become Two-Face until a sequel, if he indeed will be Dent. THR says he could play “a corrupt cop named Wasserman.”

Nevertheless, fans are ready for him to show up in a courtroom for his bifurcating acid bath as Dent. Sarsgaard’s wife, Maggie Gyllenhaal, posted an Instagram photo of her hubby “Half way through a shave.” Half his head shaved, replies excitedly ask if he is Two-Face and greet him as “Mr. Dent.”

The couple has parallel career paths. Every one of our readers – unless hiding under a rock for 11 years – knows Gyllenhaal played a DA herself, Rachel Dawes, in The Dark Knight. Dawes was a love interest to both Bruce Wayne and Harvey Dent before an explosion killed her.

Sarsgaard is known for indie melodramas and award darlings such as Boys Don’t Cry and Shattered Glass co-starring Hayden Christensen. His performance as Charles Lane in Shattered Glass earned him a Golden Globe nomination.

With Green Lantern, Sarsgaard attempted a dive into DC villainy when he played Hector Hammond, a turn that was a misfire critically and commercially.

Rounding out the rest of The Batman’s cast are Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, Andy Serkis, Colin Farrell, Paul Dano, and Jeffrey Wright. The film is scheduled for a June 25, 2021, release.
