It wasn’t clear if the end credit scene in Godzilla King of the Monsters was setting up for Godzilla vs. Kong or not but it can now be confirmed that it was.
In case you forgot, Alan Jonah, played by Charles Dance, and his man showed up at a warehouse in Mexico that was secretly housing the severed head of King Ghidorah caught by some fishermen. He bought it and we had no idea what he was going to do with it.
It turns out he sold it and the skull is seemingly being used to form the head and possibly the brain of Mechagodzilla.
Two new images from Collider taken in 2019 show director Adam Wingard on the 60-foot span set that looks like it serves as the inside of Mecha G’s dome. Have a look at them below:
Here’s the second one.
Collider writer Matt Goldberg also took a tour of the set. Here’s what he had to say, “We walked on to the set and there was a gigantic Ghidorah skull that had been wired up and made technological. It’s one of the cooler sets I’ve been on as it looks like they had taken the organic matter of Ghidorah and mechanized it into some new kind of mechanized creature.”
This partially confirms rumors and spoilers indicating Ghidorah was going to return in GVK and have an influence on one of the monsters.
His brain waves are probably what is driving Godzilla crazy in the trailers, but – while anything’s possible – we can seemingly rule out the theory that the Astro monster’s gravity beam energy will charge Kong like an electric jolt.
What’s not known for sure is if Ghidorah will be able to regenerate for a rematch down the road or if it’s still possible to set up for Mecha-King Ghidorah. A lot of fans are hoping for that last one and that Legendary Pictures is listening.
None of the merchandise from either Playmates or Bandai leads us to believe a cyborg Ghidorah is a thing in this movie, so we’ll have to wait a little longer.
Godzilla vs. Kong is also rumored to see the return of Rodan, the Behemoth, and a handful of other Titans. We shall find out when the film comes out in theaters and on HBO Max at the end of next month.
