Interviewer Eugene Rybov asks Zendaya, “Have you ever tried to ask producers to develop your character into a superhero? To give some superpower or…?”

Zendaya responds with a blunt, “No, no no.”

Holland then interjects, “They were trying for a while though. Do you remember that?”

Zendaya then said, “But I leave the superheroing to this one (she points to Tom Holland). I’m actually really happy with MH and the character that she is and that she plays.”

“And I think what’s really special about what Jon [Watts] does, I think also with Ned and MJ and Peter, is create this beautiful friendship and this love between them and this beautiful love story that’s there.

“But also like you know Spider-Man, he saves the world, but he needs help, you know? He cannot do it on his own. At the end of the day he’s just a young person trying to figure it out and that’s when Ned and MJ come in and they try to help him figure it out.”

“They’re all very smart kids, let’s not forget. So they put their brains together and they are there for each other and they support each other,” she continued.

Zendaya concluded, “I’m totally fine with being part of the team.”

While the original comic version of Mary Jane Watson typically doesn’t have superpowers, alternate versions of the character have been depicted as superheroes with superpowers.

One of those the Mary Jane Watsons is from The Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows. In that story, she dons one of Regent’s suits in order to fight the supervillain alongside the rest of her family.

In the second volume of The Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows series, Spider-Man would adapt a suit using Regent’s technology to allow Mary Jane to tap into his Spider-powers allowing her to become Spinneret.

Before revealing her secret identity, Hank Pym introduced her as Spider-Woman in Exiles #20.

As you can see there are alternative versions of Mary Jane Watson that do indeed have superpowers and become superheroes.
