What’s on Netflix shared details including the plot which the site describes as a Star Wars-level sci-fi adventure in scope and scale.

The plot of Rebel Moon is “a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius. Desperate, the colonists dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them make a stand.”

Snyder explained to The Hollywood Reporter the film is his homage to Akira Kurosawa and Star Wars – which was George Lucas’s tribute to Kurosawa’s Hidden Fortress. “This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan. It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure,” Snyder said.

Originally, Snyder developed Rebel Moon as a Star Wars pitch but What’s on Netflix notes it “didn’t move beyond meaningful conversations” with LucasFilm and Disney.

Since it’s his follow-up to Army of the Dead and all of the zombie heist film’s spin-offs, there is a question of if Snyder will turn Rebel Moon into a universe unto itself. He told THR that’s his intention.

“I’ve spent the last two or three years building out this universe. Every corner has to be painted in. I’ve been doing designs, constantly drawing and really cultivating its fertile ground to make this world fully realized,” Snyder said. “My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out.”

Produced by Snyder and his wife Deborah’s Stone Quarry company and Dawn of the Dead producer Eric Newman’s Grand Electric banner, a Rebel Moon TV series was kicked around but Netflix decided on making a “Part 1” and fleshing out the story further with sequels.

Filming is planned to take place between May and November of this year in Inyo County, California. So far, Sofia Boutella (The Mummy, Star Trek: Beyond) is the only person cast. Three lead roles are left to be filled.

With Rebel Moon Part 1 ready to go, you’d think the cast would be filled up and a release date would be announced but Netflix doesn’t have a firm date for streaming yet.
