‘Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero’ North American Release Window Announced

Crunchyroll and Toei Animation announced they will be releasing the next installment of Dragon Ball Super into theaters this August in North America with Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero sees the return of the Red Ribbon Army, who have created a new pair of androids, Gamma 1 and Gamma 2.

The official synopsis reads, “The Red Ribbon Army was once destroyed by Son Goku. Individuals, who carry on its spirit, have created the ultimate Androids, Gamma 1 and Gamma 2. These two Androids call themselves “Super Heroes”. They start attacking Piccolo and Gohan… What is the New Red Ribbon Army’s objective? In the face of approaching danger, it is time to awaken, Super Hero!”

The film will be is the first international release for Crunchyroll, who will be distributing the film in North America. They are teaming up with Sony Pictures Entertainment to distribute the film internationally including in Latin America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia except for Japan. 

The film will be released with both Japanese subtitles and dubbed versions.

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is the second film in the Dragon Ball Super franchise. The first film, Dragon Ball Super: Broly hit theaters back in 2018 and grossed $30.3 million at the domestic box office and over $122.7 million globally.

At the time of its release it was the third highest grossing anime film in North America ever, only being surpassed by Pokemon: The First Movie, which raked in $85.7 million back in 1999, and Pokemon 2000, which hauled in $43.7 million domestically.

The film has since been surpassed by Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train, which hauled in $47.7 million in 2021, and Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie, which grossed $33.9 million.

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero sees Dragon Ball’s original creator Akira Toriyama heavily involved in the development of the film as he worked on the film’s original story, its screenplay, and the film’s character design.

The movie is directed by Tetsuro Kodama and features the Japanese voice work of Masako Nozawa as Gohan, Goku, and Goten, Toshio Furukawa as Piccolo, Yūko Minaguchi as Pan, Ryō Horikawa as Vegeta, Mayumi Tanaka as Krillin, Aya Hisakawa as Bulma, Takeshi Kusao as Trunks, Miki Itō as Android 18, Bin Shimada as Broly, Kōichi Yamadera as Beerus, Masakazu Morita as Whis, Hiroshi Kamiya as Gamma 1, Mamoru Miyano as Gamma 2, Miyu Irino as Dr. Hedo, Volcano Ota as Magenta, and Ryota Takeuchi as Carmine.

In a press release, Crunchyroll promised they would announced the English voice cast at a future date.

Crunchyroll President Rahul Purini shared his excitement for the film saying, “For more than 30 years, the Dragon Ball franchise has delighted fans around the globe who have followed the world’s greatest warriors who defend Earth from forces of evil.”

“We’re thrilled to partner with Toei Animation to bring fans the latest chapter of Dragon Ball Super to the legion of super fans eager to continue the adventure and to grow the anime audiences who are discovering it for the first time,” he added.

While Crunchyroll detailed the film will release in August, they did not provide a specific release date. It will release on June 11 in Japan.

It originally was scheduled to release in March in Japan, but was delayed after Toei Animation became the victim of a cyber attack.
