DC released their first Blue Beetle trailer and it ends with one of Jamie Reyes’ family members claiming “Batman’s a fascist.”

The trailer looks like your standard superhero origin film. It shows Jamie Reyes receiving the Blue Scarab in what looks to be some kind of corporate espionage gone wrong event.

From there he struggles to figure out how the Blue Scarab works with him traveling up into space and then quickly crashing down before deploying a pair of wings just as he is about to make impact with a body of a water.

The trailer then provides some exposition on the Scarab while Reyes continues to try and figure out how to use it, going so far as cutting a bus in half.

There’s then a brief clip of Susan Sarandon as Victoria Kord, who appears to be playing an antagonist as she attempts to reclaim the Scarab. That’s then followed by what appears to be another antagonist saying, “The love you feel for your family makes you weak.”

After some more cliché superhero movie moments, Blue Beetle summons what appears to be a nod to Cloud’s Buster Sword from Final Fantasy VII. There also appears to be some Kamen Rider and Power Rangers influence as well.

Finally, the trailer ends with the exploration of a base where Reyes says, “It’s like Batman’s stuff.” His family member, played by George Lopez, responds, “Batman’s a fascist.”

The official description for the film states, “Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero BLUE BEETLE.”

The film stars Xolo Maridueña, Adriana Barraza, Damían Alcázar, Elpidia Carrillo, Bruna Marquezine, Raoul Max Trujillo, Susan Sarandon, George Lopez, Belissa Escobedo, and Harvey Guillén.

It is directed by Angel Manuel Soto based off a screenplay by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer.

Blue Beetle arrives in theaters on August 18, 2023.
