First starting production in 2006 under supervision of original SEED series director Mitsuo Fukuda and his wife, series scriptwriter Chiaki Morosawara, the completion of Freedom was placed on indefinite hiatus in 2016 after the latter passed away following a lengthy battle with an undisclosed illness.

Then, in 2021, both Fukuda and Bandai Namco announced that the next chapter in the war between the Coordinators and the Naturals had finally received a new sortie order.

“The movie is a sequel to [Mobile Suit Gundam SEED] Destiny],” explained Fukuda of the film’s story in May 2021. “The story was put together by Morosawa. At the time, she was not satisfied with the story initially and so she revised it countless times. Even after she got sick she probably wrote well over 100 drafts.”

“With the participation of new people, the script is now complete,” he added. “I also participated in the scriptwriting.”

With Freedom’s planned January release date rapidly approaching, Bandai Namco has released a brief new trailer showcasing the aforementioned Kira’s (CV: Soichiro Hoshi – Souji Okita in Rurouni Kenshin 2023) upgraded Rising Freedom, and the new Immortal Justice suit, whose pilot will presumably once again be Athrun Zala.

Further, the trailer also debuted five brand new Mobile Suits, including the Gyan Strom, the Gelgoog Menace, the Force Impulse Gundam Spec II, and the multi-colored units of the five-man Black Knight Squad.

Though the trailer remained tight-lipped on details regarding these new suits, including the identity of their respective pilots, Bandai Namco provided fans with a better look at their appearances via a character sheet uploaded to the film’s official website.
