Voice actress Amanda Winn Lee, perhaps best known for her roles as the original voice of Rei Ayanami in Neon Genesis Evangelion and Yukiko Amagi in Persona 4, has blamed GamerGate for Twitter’s refusal to give her account a verified blue checkmark.

On August 31st, Winn-Lee took to her personal account to share a rejection notice from Twitter, in which the platform asserted that “this account will not be verified at this time because the evidence provided did not meet our criteria for notability,” with her followers.

Alongside the image, Winn-Lee noted, “I keep pics of stuff like this to remind myself not to get too cocky.”

In response, a fan half-jokingly opined that, until DC and Marvel writer Gail Simone was verified, “the whole thing is just a sham.”

Taking her and Simone’s lack of verification as some sort of sinister plot against women, Winn-Lee quote-tweeted the fan and wrote, “Ah. I see. There’s a pocket of incel Gamergate losers in Twitter’s verification department. Good to know.”

Hilariously, in reality, both Simone and Winn-Lee should be verified, as both are notable (regardless of one’s personal opinions on them) figures in their respective fields.

However, that they are haven’t been is not evidence of some bizarre anti-woman plot manufactured by an eight-year-old boogeyman, but rather of how, once meant to simply confirm that a user is who they said they were, has become nothing more than a membership card into an ever-narrowily defined group of Twitter-approved users.
