In a testament to the popularity and quality of the beloved shonen series, the latest film in the My Hero Academia series – My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission – both opened in the 4th spot in North America and took the title of the franchise’s highest-grossing cinematic outing.
Debuting in American and Canadian theaters on October 29th, MHA: World Heroes’ Mission premiered in theaters to the tune of $6.4 million being beaten by Dune, Halloween Kills, and No Time to Die.
However, if you look at the film’s opening day release on October 29th, it was the #2 movie for that day grossing $2,885,252, being beaten out only by Denis Vilenueve’s critical and audience darling, Dune, which pulled in $4,941,106.
The box office total raked in by MHA: World Heroes’ Mission on its release day also beat the previous franchise record set by the previous film, My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising, which opened on February 26th, 2020 – right before the COVID-19 pandemic halted in-person showings of films across the board. That film grossed $2,583,834 on its opening day.
With the film’s opening weekend in North America, the movie’s worldwide gross now sits at $35,790,488.
As mentioned above, this international box office total – pulled in just over 12 weeks – solidifies the third MHA film as the overall highest-grossing in the franchise worldwide, beating yet another record previously held by MHA: Heroes’ Rising, which pulled in a total of $30,018,088 over its roughly 54 week release window.
Taking place roughly after the My Hero Academia anime series’ fifth season, MHA: World Heroes’ Mission sees the heroes of Japan undertake a mission to clear Deku’s name after the young hero is wrongly accused of murdering twelve people.
The official synopsis, as provided by the series’ North American licensor Funimation, can be read below:
It states, “When a sinister organization threatens to wipe out all superhuman powers, the fate of the world is on the line. With two hours until the collapse of civilization, Deku, Bakugo, and Todoroki manage to work as a team, but there’s still one problem. Deku’s on the run for murder.”
