Requiem of the Rose King, A “Gender-Bent Twist to Shakespeare’s Richard III”, To Receive Anime Adaptation

Akita Publishing, the Japanese publisher of the popular manga Requiem of the Rose King, has announced that the Shakespeare-based series will be receiving an anime adaptation.

The news was announced in a special trailer released by Akita Publishing that showcases various scenes and characters from the manga:

In celebration of this announcement, mangaka Aya Kanno published a new drawing of the series’ main characters:

Based on Shakespeare’s Richard III and Henry VI and described by the book’s American publisher, VIZ Media , as “a gothic-tinged drama that gives a new gender-bent twist to Shakespeare’s Richard III,” Requiem of the Rose King follows the story of Richard III during the historical War of the Roses.

In the series, Richard III is described as being intersex, with characters regularly describing his body with confusion as to his gender. Despite this, Richard III identifies as male.

As of writing, no further details surrounding the production of the Requiem of the Rose King anime have been announced.
