Marvel Comics Reboots Captain Marvel in Brand New #1
Marvel Comics will once again be rebooting Captain Marvel with a brand new #1 issue in January.
The series will be written by Kelly Thompson with art by Carmen Carnero and colors by Tamra Bonvillain. The first issue will also feature a cover by long-time Harley Quinn scribe and artist Amanda Conner. They will be joined by editors Sarah Brunstad and Wil Moss.
The new series will see Carol Danvers return to New York City where she is expected to face new threats and obstacles. According to The New York Times, the series “will reconnect Captain Marvel with allies like Iron Man and her best friend Spider-Woman as well as offer new relationships.”
Now, that’s interesting that the New York Times is referring to Captain Marvel and Iron Man as allies. The two were recently featured in one of Marvel’s big event series Civil War II that saw them on opposing sides. In fact, Carol Danvers would knock Tony Stark aka Iron Man into a coma.
Writer Kelly Thompson discussed the character as well as the upcoming story, “I think the character is incredibly important, maybe now more than ever.” She would add, “Carol, unlike a lot of other heroes, is incredibly human and flawed, which makes her relatable.”
Thompson discusses how this comic will allow new fans from the upcoming Captain Marvel film connect with the character, but also respect older fans.
“You really want her to be accessible to new and younger audiences who are going to see the movie, fall in love and want to seek out other Captain Marvel stories. But you really want to respect the fans who have loved the character for decades. I think there’s a razor’s edge there.”
Kelly Thompson teases the story will definitely involve a romance, but she only hinted at who it might be,”There will definitely be some romance and it may be someone we all know and have seen before in Marvel Comics.” She would then tease some potential guest stars, “This first arc has some female guest stars in an unexpected way.” Thompson would also indicate that the first issue has some “costume weirdness.” She notes, “It’s  a little bit of a risk, but I think people are going to respond to it.”
The New York Times indicates the story will focus on “Captain Marvel’s stature as a feminist hero and her encouragement of other women.” In fact, they state it “is one of the elements that unifies the Carol Corps, the character’s dedicated fan base.”
Captain Marvel #1 is expected to hit stands on January 2, 2019 a few months before Carol Danvers makes her big screen debut in Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel.
