Comic Book Review: Wonder Woman: Rebirth #1

Wonder Woman, the name that everyone all over the world knows. One of the few other super heroes that share this distinction would be Superman. For many girls growing up Wonder Woman is the symbol of ultimate female power. Not only is she smart, strong, beautiful, and complex, Diana proves that strength of mind and heart are real powers that anyone can have. She is an example, and hero that any parent would enjoy watching their daughters look up too.

With DC’s new Rebirth line-wide relaunch, [easyazon_link identifier=”B01FIPI6ZC” locale=”US” tag=”bounintocomi-20″]Wonder Woman: Rebirth #1[/easyazon_link] has us bear witness to the duality that is tearing Wonder Woman apart. Like the other DC heroes Diana knows something is wrong, memories are mixing together, and it’s becoming more and more difficult for Wonder Woman to make sense of what’s going on.

Like the other Rebirth issues, this isn’t a reboot of the character or a reimagining of Diana. This is more like a project that is looking to tie up all of it’s loose ends, through the eyes of your favorite heroes. They are aware and confused that there are loose ends, they know that something has to be done. But figuring out what is wrong, and in the end, what has to be done to correct this wrong are the big questions that are introduced in the first issue.

Writer Greg Rucka, is tasked with not only putting this puzzle of a person together, but also drawing the reader into the mind of Diana, as she struggles to bring her past and present together. Greg does a great job in doing both of these. As you read along, you can feel the emotion and confusion that surrounds Wonder Woman. Rucka’s style of writing is a great vehicle for allowing Diana’s state of mind to really enter your own mind. You are drawn not only to this, but the world around her that seems both real and wrong at the same time. You know something isn’t right, but you just cannot put your finger on it.

Artists Liam Sharp and Paulo Siqueira bring to life the almighty Amazon princess of the Justice League. Her world is both full of life, and confusion, as they use their talents to draw her into her form. The art styles of Paulo and Liam complement each other very well by using their duel skills to give birth to a rich world that is pleasing to the reader’s eyes. As her story goes farther I fully expect that they will continue to bring top tier quality and do Diana justice with their skill. One of my favorite scenes involves Diana smashing a mirror, and as the pieces fall onto the ground you are able to see glimpses of some of those loose ends that haunt her. This illustrates perfectly the skill both artists have.
