Alita: Battle Angel producer Jon Landau recently gave fans of the film a promising update on a potential sequel for the film.

Speaking with Deadline at the premiere of Avatar: The Way of Water, Landau was asked if he would be working on any other films aside from Avatar in the upcoming future.

He responded, “Well, there’s a little film called Alita: Battle Angel that we’d love to circle back and do a sequel to. We’ve been talking to Robert [Rodriguez] about that and hopefully that comes to fruition.”

When asked how far away is that, he responded, “Well, look, I never put a time frame on anything because you guys will hold it against me.

Rodriguez previously provided an update on a possible sequel back in August 2021.

He told The Nerdy Basement, “I’m hoping I’m earning some point by doing so much for Disney, cause they own it now, and that’s why we weren’t able to jump right into the sequel, because of that whole thing. But now they are starting to release some of the Fox stuff.”

“I’m trying to see what happens with Boba Fett, I think that’s going to knock people’s socks off so when that happens I will go in and say, ok, I’ve been here for a while, let’s figure out how we can do Alita whether it’s for streaming or theatrical because it’s such a great property, people love it, I love it and Jim loves it,” he continued.

He concluded, “We [Robert and Jim] just talked about it recently again, about how can we do this, what’s the best way to approach it, I think it’ll be me going in there with him to talk about it because I’m doing a lot of stuff for them [Disney] now.”

Back in July 2019, Rosa Salazar, who plays Alita in the film, told Slash Film, “I would play Alita ’til my last breath. I would, and thanks to the performance capture technology, I probably could.”

She also encouraged fans of the film to go out and support it by purchasing Blu-rays in the hopes it would convince executives at The Walt Disney Company to greenlight a sequel.

When asked about a sequel she said, “Not yet, but buy those Blu-rays on Amazon. But no, I haven’t heard anything yet.”

Alita: Battle Angel grossed $84.8 million at the domestic box office when it released back in 2019. It grossed another $316 million at the international box office for a worldwide total of $401.9 million.

The film reportedly had a production budget of $170 million. Meaning the film either barely broke even or came up a little short given films traditionally have to return 2.5x their production budget in order to break even.

The-Numbers reports the movie grossed a little less than $5 million from domestic DVD sales and nearly $19.2 million in domestic Blu-ray sales for a total of $24.1 million in combined DVD and Blu-ray sales.
