Avengers: Infinity War Writers Confirm Old Tesseract Theory
Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe know that the Tesseract was actually the first Infinity Stone we saw on the big screen all the way back in Captain America: The First Avenger. However, before the Tesseract was revealed to be the Space Stone, there was a popular theory that it was actually a Cosmic Cube. In fact, that’s exactly what it was according to Avengers: Infinity War writers Stephen McFeeley and Christopher Markus.
In a recent interview with Collider, the Avengers: Infinity War scribes discussed the inclusion of Red Skull to the film. While discussing Red Skull they revealed the Tesseract was actually being referred to as the Cosmic Cube behind the scenes.
If you are unfamiliar with the Cosmic Cube it first appeared in the pages of Tales of Suspense #79, but we wouldn’t discover how powerful it truly was until Tales of Suspense #80 when the Red Skull claimed the Cosmic Cube and revealed just how powerful the item was.
The writers explain, “Obviously, we started with him, 10 years ago and he had the Cosmic Cube, which was then referred to sometimes as the Cosmic Cube, and we didn’t know it was one of the Infinity Stones.”
It definitely sounds like the Tesseract was actually supposed to be the Cosmic Cube until they decided to adapt the Infinity Gauntlet story arc and showcase the Infinity Stones and the Infinity Gauntlet.
Given the fact that the Tesseract was originally supposed to be the Cosmic Cube, that begs the question of whether there is an actual Cosmic Cube somewhere out there in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Could the Avengers seek out the Cosmic Cube in Avengers 4 in order to combat Thanos and his Infinity Gauntlet? I wouldn’t be surprised if the Cosmic Cube shows up sooner rather than later in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And who knows with the Red Skull confirmed back in action, maybe he might get wind of it and seek it out.
