Avengers: Infinity War Writers Explain Why Ant-Man Doesn’t Show Up!
**Warning Spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War Below**
Avengers: Infinity War writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely sat down for a wide ranging interview with The Hollywood Reporter where they answered questions on Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, and more in regards to the latest Marvel Studios epic.
But one of the questions that caught my eye was about the whereabouts of Hawkeye and Ant-Man in Avengers: Infinity War. The writing duo explained why Ant-Man didn’t show up.
Stephen McFeely noted:
“When we get to this time next year, all will become clear. Ant-Man clearly had a specific requirement, which is he had an entire movie [July’s Ant-Man and The Wasp] that is going to come between these two movies. Same thing with Captain Marvel, by the way. We looked at that as an opportunity, not as some sort of backbend we had to do.”
Christopher Markus added:
“Also, Ant-Man the franchise is very light-hearted. It’s fun. It maybe even skews younger. If we were to put Ant-Man in this extremely heavy movie, and then have to say to the guys who are making the Ant-Man movie, ‘Yeah, he went through hell, but now go ahead and have your little romp and we’ll pick it up afterwards,’ that’s why we have to really sort of manage your interconnections and go, ‘Let’s go and hold off so you can enjoy that without feeling a bad taste in your mouth.'”
While they don’t specifically reveal a story connection as to why Ant-Man isn’t Avengers: Infinity War, Markus definitely hints we might find out why in Ant-Man and The Wasp. I’m not really buying Markus’ explanation about the tone and putting Ant-Man through hell. The Guardians of the Galaxy has a very similar light-hearted tone. I mean the final boss fight is literally a dance off between Star-Lord and Ronan, but those characters were included in Avengers: Infinity War. In fact, a number of the Guardians of the Galaxy characters go through some of the worst crap Thanos can throw at them. He kills Gamora and Nebula is severely tortured.
And the first Ant-Man movie had its adult moments too. Darren Cross aka Yellowjacket kill Frank by vaporizing him and then flushing him down the toilet. Talk about anything but “very light-hearted.”
Regardless, we will find out exactly what’s been going on with Ant-Man this Summer when Ant-Man and The Wasp hits theaters on July 6.
