Bruce Campbell Says He Is “Ready” to Play “Geezer Superman”

A Superman movie, not a priority at the moment for studio Warner Bros., just can’t get made. If a new one has any hope, beloved cult actor Bruce Campbell is throwing his hat in the ring – inspired by a similarity a fan noticed.

Twitter user @GothamRemnant believes Kingdom Come Superman as drawn by Alex Ross bears “an exact likeness” to Campbell who retweeted and responded he is “ready for Geezer Superman.”

He also added a selfie showing off his grey beard – which Clark Kent sported in the story briefly.

Responses in the thread have been mostly favorable and prompted the creation of the hashtag #BruceCampbellSuperman. And users are upping the ante by calling for Xena star Lucy Lawless to play Wonder Woman.

Lawless played Wonder Woman once before, providing Diana’s voice in Justice League: New Frontier. She and Campell have a well-known history playing opposite one another in episodes of Xena: Warrior Princess and Ash vs Evil Dead. Both are favorite players of director/producer Sam Raimi.

Campbell cameoed in all three Raimi Spider-Man movies and lent his voice to their video game counterparts. He also appeared at the tail end of Darkman – a role he was up for – as Peyton Westlake’s last disguise (credited as “Final Shemp”).

Pulp adventurer The Phantom was another role Campbell was considered for but he lost it to Billy Zane. These days, the veteran horror icon is blase when it comes to modern superhero flicks and their CGI spectacles. He was particularly harsh about Batman v. Superman in a recent Gizmodo interview, saying:

“Stupid, stupid, stupid concept. Never should’ve been made. Superman who can like, make the world go backwards with centrifugal force. Batman can’t do that.”

He added the studio “spent a lot of money kidding themselves.” In 2015, a year before the release of BVS, he expressed the frustration to the LA Times that “some superheroes” are “too perfect”:

“I don’t like characters that are too perfect. What are you going to do with them? That’s my only problem with some superheroes is that they’re too perfect.”

In the Gizmodo interview, he decried green screens and tennis balls on sticks, reminding wannabe filmmakers they don’t need a vast budget or Hollywood; all they need are good stories.

At this rate, a Superman: Kingdom Movie starring the actor who played Ash Williams – the terror of the Evil Dead and their armies of darkness – is as fresh and original an idea as you can get. Warner might even budge on this one – Lord willing.

If somebody (anybody, even J.J. Abrams) can make the story good enough – and the effects practical enough – then we might get Bruce Campbell as Superman.
