The Rogue’s Gallery for The Batman isn’t set as of yet although we are assured there will be quite a few bad guys.
One name getting dropped routinely is Catwoman, and several actresses are ready for the Bat’s criminal love interest to join the action. As such, they are vying for the part ahead of time.
Aubrey Plaza is the latest to express her interest. During an appearance on The Late Show, she reiterated how much she wants the role and, interestingly, confessed her love for the much-maligned Halle Berry Catwoman film:
“Okay, I’ve said that in like a couple interviews because… I get asked questions like, ‘If you were a superhero, which one would you want to be?’ And I just always think of Catwoman because I just love that character and I love the Catwoman movie. The Halle Berry one. But it’s not something I think about every day… I’m just not gonna even try to get that part. There’s no way in Hell they’re gonna cast me.”
Unsure as she is of her chances, Plaza still donned a pair of cat ears for a mock audition.
And there will be competition. Polar star Vanessa Hudgens is rumored to be eyeing the role as well. Hudgens dressed as Catwoman for Halloween and was on an unconfirmed list of potentials brought to us by YouTube’s BYO. She revealed its a dream role; then fan art gave a glimpse of what she might look like opposite Robert Pattinson.
Morena Baccarin is another fan who says Catwoman would be the role of a lifetime. The Gotham star once said she’s wanted to play her forever.
Both Hudgens (who’s been in Polar, Powerless, and Sucker Punch) and Baccarin (Gotham, the Deadpool movies) have comic book cred, so neither would have trouble making Matt Reeves’ shortlist.
Speculation also swirls around someone else who went as Catwoman for Halloween: Baby Driver and Alita actress Eiza Gonzalez. She is in next year’s MonsterVerse installment of King Kong Vs. Godzilla (also a Warner Bros. production). If all goes well with that, Gonzalez could find herself in the running.
Catwoman has been immortalized many times on the big and small screens. Anne Hathaway played her in [easyazon_link identifier=”B009LRE040″ locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]The Dark Night Rises[/easyazon_link]. Halle Berry played an alternate version of the whip-cracking feline in a standalone adventure. And Michelle Pfeiffer is perhaps the most famous Selina Kyle of the past three decades for her portrayal in [easyazon_link identifier=”B001X0ZKM4″ locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Batman Returns[/easyazon_link].
The villainess also managed to get caught up in the swinging-60s camp of the Adam West Batman, played by a few actresses including Julie Newmar and Eartha Kitt (considered by her peers and many others to be the best Catwoman of that era).
The next turn for Catwoman, voiced by Sanaa Lathan (Blade, Alien Vs. Predator), will be in the Harley Quinn animated series on DC Universe.
Aubrey Plaza can be seen next in Child’s Play, out this weekend. The Batman won’t hit screens until 2021 — barring further delays.
Is Aubrey Plaza someone you want to see as Catwoman? Leave us some remarks.
