Deadpool 2 Director David Leitch Opens Up On Cable and Domino!
Hold on to your chimichangas, folks!
Deadpool 2 is currently filming, coming out June 1 of next year. Director David Leitch opened up a bit about what we can expect from two new additions to the Deadpool universe. Cable (played by Josh Brolin) and Domino (played by Zazie Beetz)
Talking to Screen Rant about his recent film Atomic Blonde, Leitch mentioned the difficulties in approaching Domino’s character and her powers.
“We’re excited to play with that idea in choreography. I’m not going to give you how it’s all going to play out. As a choreographer, having a character with her abilities is really a trick. I think at first it seems like a problem. Like oh my god, how do you demonstrate luck? And then you just see it like, oh, this is the coolest opportunity ever, so we’re really excited and we’re creating really great stuff for her character.”
Domino in the comics is a notable warrior, who uses luck and probability to aid her in combat. Her powers are very similar to Longshot from any of the Mojo arcs in the X-Men comics.
David Leitch also spoke with Screen Rant about his approach to Cable. Cable, or Nathan Summers, has a long history as the son of two X-Men titans, Jean Grey and Scott Summers. That and being a cyborg from the future world devastated by Apocalypse.
“Look, I think besides all of the Deadpool, sort of the film universe Deadpool, you kind of have to be selective of like how you approach these characters because there’s a canon of work that’s so massive that you could never put it all on screen. So we’ve been really particular what we’re going to put in and what we’re going to leave for potential future if it goes that way and, uh, I think you’ll like it. It’s all in the spirit of canon, and also in the spirit of like what Deadpool the movie is.”
The first Deadpool had Colossus, who also had a long history with the X-Men and with the Brotherhood of Mutants. In that movie, the writers managed to capture the spirit of Colossus in his virtues. They also managed to poke fun at him a little bit for his social awkwardness. I believe that with the same good writing and some self-awareness, they’ll do the same for both Cable and Domino.
Deadpool 2 will be out in theaters on June 1, 2018.
