Disney To Reboot Flight of the Navigator With Another Gender Swap
A new report claims that The Walt Disney Company will reboot the 1980s sci-fi film Flight of the Navigator with a gender swap.
The Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit claims, “Bryce Dallas Howard is attached to direct and produce a female-led reimagining of the 1986 kids sci-fi adventure movie for Walt Disney Studios.”
Kit also adds, “In the new iteration, the protagonist will be female, although it is unclear if the age bracket will change as well.”
A previous reboot of the film had been reported by Variety back in 2017. At the time Lucifer showrunner Joe Henderson had been reportedly tapped to write the film’s script.
In 2009, Arrested Development’s Brad Copeland had been hired to write a draft for a remake of the film as will. Then in 2021, Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly were hired to write another script with Trevorrow more than likely expected to take on directing duties. Clearly, none of those projects got off the ground.
The original Flight of the Navigator was written by Mark H. Baker, Michael Burton, and Phil Joanou. It was directed by Randal Kleiser.
The movie starred Joey Cramer as David Freeman, a 12-year-old boy who is adducted by an alien in 1978 and transported eight years into the future to 1986.
Upon arriving in 1986 he’s eventually reunited with his family, but not for long as NASA officials discover a link between Freeman and a crashed UFO they recovered.
NASA scientists soon discover that Freeman actually traveled to the alien planet of Phaelon and has acquired extensive alien information now stored in his mind.
After receiving a telepathic communication from the spaceship, Freeman boards the ship and is able to escape from the NASA scientists and assist the ship’s robotic commander named Max on his mission to collect biological specimens and take them to Phaelon for analysis.
Specifically, Freeman takes part in a mind-transfer to allow Max access to the star charts and other information in David’s head. Max had lost access to this information when he crash-landed on Earth.
The two then team-up to try and reunite David with his family. However, NASA agents attempt to stop them. In order to get rid of the NASA scientists and agents, David asks Max to return him to 1978.
The original film has 6.9 weighted average on IMDB from 46,124 users. It is currently available to watch on Disney+.
