James Gunn Shoots Down Rumor Netflix Could Buy The Snyderverse, Says His DCU Has Zack Snyder’s Blessing

The chances of the Snyderverse continuing are slim to none but the fans are unassuaged. In the last few weeks, the hashtag #SellSnyderVerseToNetflix got trending in the hopes of igniting the same fervor and striking the same luck as the #ReleasetheSnyderCut. On paper, the plan makes sense. Netflix is where Zack Snyder is stationed now, building the world of Rebel Moon into a franchise.

There is hope too that Warner Bros. Discovery will outsource the production and distribution of their DC content to streaming beyond HBO Max. None of this is likely to fall into place unless the speculation is true that WBD CEO David Zaslav is prepping DC for a sale and the new slate is just a façade covering that agenda up.

The tag still trended long enough for James Gunn to give disappointing news to Snyderphiles. “I have to say, this has got to be the wackiest hashtag ever,” Gunn responded on Twitter. “1) Netflix hasn’t expressed any such interest (although we’ve discussed other stuff) & 2) Zack hasn’t expressed any interest & seems to be happy doing what he’s doing (and, yes, we too have talked).”

Asked to clarify what they talked about, Gunn answered, “He contacted me to express his support about my choices. He’s a great guy. Again, he seems really happy with the massive world-building he’s doing now.” Gunn is alluding to the fact that Rebel Moon — formerly a Star Wars pitch — is so grand in scale that it’s been split into two movies.

Just as the last two Hunger Games and Harry Potter films were split, Snyder has done the same and is expanding other properties he’s created and developed at Netflix. Army of the Dead already had a spinoff in Army of Thieves and an anime explaining the origin of the zombie plague is on the way as well.

While Gunn and Peter Safran through DC Studios are resetting the DCU by erasing most of what Snyder did, he’s going to be too busy to care, in a nutshell. This might dismay Snyderverse supporters and those that started the tag, but they should remember he stated a while ago he was happy with the DC trilogy he managed to put out.

Good with Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, and his cut of Justice League that streams on HBO Max after much toil, he also repudiated Geeks + Gamers as well as right-wing agendas in interviews on his way out the door at Warner/DC Films, which people tend to forget. Still, the push for more Snyderverse continued with signs of hope until late 2022.
