Joe Russo Reveals Why Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel Looks Different in Avengers: Endgame Trailers

Avengers: Endgame director Joe Russo revealed why Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel looks different in the Avengers: Endgame trailers as compared to the Captain Marvel movie.

Russo spoke to SlashFilm while at Cinema Con revealing it was Brie Larson’s choice.

“This was Brie’s first time playing the character. She [filmed Avengers: Endgame] before she filmed Captain Marvel, and I think she was experimenting with what the character was. And those were the choices that she and her hair and makeup team had made. And I think as she started to gain a deeper understanding of the character, especially as she approached her own movie. She started to make different choices and as an artist she should be afforded that right to make whatever choice that she wants to make.”

The Russo brothers did indicate they “set the parameters…in terms of what we need” when it comes to hairstyles and makeup, but Joe Russo noted, “We give all the actors ownership over there.” In fact, he pointed to Scarlett Johansson’s blonde wig in Avengers: Infinity War as being Scarlett’s decision, “Every hairstyle that Scarlet Johansson has had and every movie that we’ve done has come from Scarlet Johansson.”

Larson confirmed she shot Avengers: Endgame before Captain Marvel saying, “This film [Endgame] will always be personally dear to me because it was my first time playing Captain Marvel.” She added, “We shot this first so I had to stumble and figure out who this character was with no script for this and no script for Captain Marvel, either, and perform for the first time in front of legends.”

Larson’s Avengers: Endgame Captain Marvel look drew strong criticism when the character appeared in the second official Avengers: Endgame trailer. A number of fans complained the character was wearing makeup with some suggesting she was wearing too much makeup. A meme of Anthony and Joe Russo even began making the rounds depicting the Avengers: Endgame directors covered in makeup with one user who shared the meme, “Captain Marvel Don’t Need MakeUp At ALL.”

What do you make of this explanation and the realization that the choice behind Larson’s Captain Marvel Avengers: Endgame look was actually her own?
