John Boyega might have revealed one of the biggest spoilers for the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi when he spoke to ABC News.
Boyega told ABC News, “This movie, it sends her off in an amazing, amazing way.” He went on, “And she is still kept alive in this franchise. That’s the beauty of it: She lives forever in a sense.”
Boyega also spilled the beans that his character Finn has a bunch of scenes with Fisher’s General Organa, “[Carrie] and I have many scenes in this one.”
He then went on to relate how he found out about Fisher’s untimely death and how it affected the cast. “I was in Nigeria when we found out. It was a strange, strange feeling. I felt like everyone in the cast went silent for a bit after that.”
Carrie Fisher was expected to play a role in the final episode of this new trilogy. Despite her tragic death, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confirmed that Fisher’s death did not impact The Last Jedi‘s story line. She told Vanity Fair, “No. It’s unchanged.” However, Kennedy did tell Vanity Fair that Fisher’s death had a significant impact on Episode IX. She described Fisher’s role as “really significant.” She also added, “Her death was a real shock, and changed things quite dramatically.”
Boyega’s Finn was last seen recovering from a horrific lightsaber injury suffered at the hands of Kylo Ren. Images from Star Wars: The Last Jedi depict him recovering in what looks to be some kind of bacta tank.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15, 2017.
