Mark Hamill Opens Up About Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi
Mark Hamill finally broke his silence about The Last Jedi and many fans who disliked the film will be nodding their heads in agreement.
One of the biggest complaints about the new Star Wars films is how Rian Johnson saw Luke Skywalker. In fact, his first scene he takes the lightsaber and chucks it over his shoulder off the side of a cliff.
Mark Hamill believed this wasn’t in character for Luke or a Jedi.
I said to Rian, ‘Jedi’s don’t give up.’ I mean, even if he had a problem, he would maybe take a year to try and regroup. But if he made a mistake, he would try and right that wrong. So, right there we had a fundamental difference, but it’s not my story anymore. It’s somebody else’s story – and Rian needed me to be a certain way to make the ending effective.
Hamill then goes on to say this isn’t even Luke Skywalker, this is a new character.
That’s the crux of my problem. Luke would never say that. I’m sorry. Well, in this version, see I’m talking about the George Lucas Star Wars. This is the next generation of Star Wars, so I almost had to think of Luke as another character. Maybe he’s Jake Skywalker. He’s not my Luke Skywalker, but I had to do what Rian wanted me to do because it serves the story well.

Hamill hits the nail on the head. This is not Luke Skywalker from the Original Trilogy. He’s right that Luke Skywalker would never act like the way Rian Johnson portrayed him. And it reinforces my opinion that no matter how much Johnson says he loves Star Wars, he fundamentally doesn’t understand it. In fact, Johnson breaks the fourth wall on a number of occasions throughout the film to speak directly to the audience. It’s kind of sickening how much disdain he has for the fans. And the fact that Lucasfilm and Disney approved this just shows their complete disrespect to the franchise.
Kylo Ren tells Rey, “Let the past die. Kill it, if you have to. That’s the only way to become what you were meant to be.” However, this line is actually directed to the audience and not Rey. He wants to kill the past. Kill the original trilogy. Kill the actual history of Star Wars to create his own version of what Star Wars should be. Lucky for us you can’t actually kill history and the Original Trilogy will still be around. In fact, I would bet the Original Trilogy will long surpass Johnson’s The Last Jedi and his upcoming new Star Wars trilogy.
Hamill also added, “I still haven’t accepted it completely. But it’s only a movie. I hope people like it. I hope they don’t get upset.”
It is only a movie, but it’s also more than a movie. Star Wars has become a cultural phenomenon.
Hamill did go onto somewhat praise Johnson saying, “I came to really believe that Rian was the exact man that they need for this job.” I guess if you want to try to nuke movie history, Rian Johnson is the guy you go to?
What do you think about Hamill’s thoughts on Luke Skywalker?
